My take is that there were many love stories woven throughout, many never triumphing, their value in that love was there at all. "Love is a visitor."

I think it's meant to be ambiguous. Speaking strictly for myself, if a way could be found, I'd want Patch and Saint to get to be together. (Sorry, should have done the spoiler thing, don't really know how though)

I think the love story is everyone's feelings toward Patch. They all loved him - Saint, Norma, Misty, Sammy, Charlotte, Grace, all the parents of all the missing girls who wanted someone to remember their daughters. Even Nix and Tooms who always kept an eye on him and Himes who wanted Saint to find him before some police officer killed him.

The way I read it, the "love story" was about Patch & Misty. Against all odds, she ended up loving him for the rest of her life, he fathered her child, & they stayed close into adulthood. As teenagers, Patch, Saint, & Grace became interconnected by trauma & obsession, but that's not the same as love.
