My initial answer to this was "poorly". After some reflection I tend to take an idea and let it wander around in the deep dark recesses of my brain and admire the scenery.
Once it has finished having a wander I then sit down and put it on paper.
I also check to make sure it didn't steal any cutlery while it was in there.
