Was it worth it becoming a self-published author instead of a traditionally-published author?

I don't know because there wasn't an option in my city to become traditionally published. The publishers here want payment upfront in order to publish with them, and I couldn't afford it. I've seen people say this is vanity publishing since traditional publishers don't charge upfront, and instead, will take a steep royalty. Either way, if I didn't self publish, I wouldn't be able to publish at all.
