I'm a bit confused about Umegat's groom, Daris. At the end of the book, it seems implied that Daris was the man Umegat fell in love with, when he was in the Roknari islands. But Umegat says that man was hanged, so what is Daris's story?

Umegat's first love was indeed horribly executed. Daris was a later love. Who also ran into grave perils, presumably on some joint spying mission, possibly against the Golden General's forces, but at least he survived. There might have been a heroic or at least clever rescue by Umegat in there somewhere.

It's a nerd specific question but I admit to being an obsessed fan: what happens to the liveried butter bugs? Do they manage to catch the queen before she burrows into Vorkosigan House, or is Vorbarr Sultana overrun with them. And if so can Miles ( and his Armsman) laugh about it?

I just finished Andrew Roberts' excellent biography of Napoleon. I kept thinking, "This guy sure reminds me of Miles Vorkosigan." I was tickled by one detail: Miles' opinion that a shower is as good as three hours' sleep (from Cryoburn, I think?) is shared by Napoleon, although his quote is about a bath and four hours. I'm curious about the extent to which biographical details about Napoleon inspired Miles.
