I just learned about Sir Ewan Forbes, a trans nobleman born in 1912 who successfully sued to inherit his baronetcy in 1965 over the objections of his cousin. I immediately thought of Dono, of course. Did you know about his case when you wrote Civil Campaign, or is it an interesting coincidence?

Nope, had never heard of him. Donna/Dono was invented out of the needs of a subplot for Ivan, on the spot as it were. He got a life of his own pretty instantly as I wrote him.
I had heard of other historical people gender-switching before then, usually women passing as men to become soldiers.
ACC was written in 1998, for anyone calibrating influences.

As I was enjoying home made Sweet Potato Pie with real whipped cream I was reminded of Tej's enjoyment of real dairy cream, in spite of her distrust of animal products not vat produced. If only I had sweetened it with Maple I would have had a real Vorkosigian treat. (Well, since I can't get bug butter.) Are you especially fond of real maple sugar products and real cream or are those literary devices?
