I dealt with this "mystery" in my first book, a reported memoir titled, Finding Manana: A Memoir of a Cuban Exodus. I set out to discover my own immigration story and to understand how and why the Cuban government had allowed more than 125,000 people to leave the island in 1980, and, more importantly, why and how the US had accepted all of us, despite the fears and the bad publicity.
