Hi, James! Just read The Will of the Many this year after my friend recommended it to me and I was lucky enough to get an eARC of The Strength of the Few. I’ve never been more enamored and obsessed with a book series and its characters. Who are your top three characters you’ve written in the Hierarchy series?

(view spoiler)[Thanks, that's amazing to hear (especially exciting to hear from someone who's read Strength!).
It's funny, I get asked this (or similar) a bit and it feels like I should have a better answer, but... aside from Vis, I really don't have 'favourite' or 'best' characters. If I was a reader, I almost certainly would - I do with pretty much every series I read - but when it comes to writing, I just genuinely enjoy working with each of the major characters, albeit for different reasons (I touched on this a bit in an answer from earlier today). I think having favourite characters kind of implies that I find others less interesting to write, too - and if that's happening, there's probably a problem with my character work!
(But if I was going to cheat, I'd say Vis, Siamun and Deaglan...) (hide spoiler)]

I just read the first book in the Hierarchy series and I loved it. I can't decide whether I like the characters or the story and the world building more. So I guess my question is this: Did you have a character (Vis) in mind first and then built the world and the story around the character or the other way around?
