I just read the first book in the Hierarchy series and I loved it. I can't decide whether I like the characters or the story and the world building more. So I guess my question is this: Did you have a character (Vis) in mind first and then built the world and the story around the character or the other way around?

That's lovely to hear, thank you! From memory, Vis came first, with a vague idea of what the world around him should look like - and then the worldbuilding and story came after that. But each of those things influences the others so strongly as the story gets developed, it's really hard to say one was categorically formed before the other!

My question is: Does music inspire your writing, and if so do you listen to music while you write/ what music do you listen to?

Hello James, I've finished your book and I'm absolutely blown away with what you've crafted,I cannot wait for more. A few questions if you don't mind: When will you be releasing the next book? Please tell me you won't be pulling a Rothfuss & make me wait 7 years, or I'm sorry but my Sha'teth friends will be wanting to arrange a deal. Did you write the entire series in one go or one book after another?

The internal voice of Vis is very analytical and rational. He thinks before he acts, has clear, logical reasons for what he does. I feel like almost every character in the book does this. Was that a concious decision, did you spend extra time on developing this side of the book? It makes the characters extremely realistic and enjoyable to read. BTW, I just finished my 8th re-read of the novel.
