Marie Rivers asked Lisa McMann:

Hello Ms. mcMann! I'm trying to write a novel but I'm having trouble being inspired. Where do you get your inspiration from? PS. I love your writing, youre definitely one of my all time favorite authors :)

Lisa McMann I get inspired by nature, news stories, and weird things I see people do. One of the very best things you can do to be a better writer and to get tons of ideas is to notice the unusual and interesting things that other people are doing, and then ask a "what if" question. For instance, if you see somebody at the movie theater trip and fall on the steps, you might ask yourself, "what if that person fell and totally disappeared through the floor?"

Once you have a good "what if" question, start coming up with possible outcomes. Where would the person end up? What would happen to them there? Would anybody in the theater notice the person disappeared? What would happen?

I hope this helps you!

Lisa
