Goodreads asked Daniel Quinn:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Daniel Quinn No one has said it better than William Faulkner: "Read, read, read. Read everything—trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master. Read! You'll absorb it. Then write."

That's part one. Part two: Resist the temptation to publish yourself. Self-publishing is very, very easy now, but unless you're already an established author with a ready-made following, it's no better than sealing your manuscript in a bottle and throwing it into the ocean.
