You have created many adventurous, charismatic, and expressive characters. I had the pleasure of meeting of you a few years ago, and you seemed more on the laid-back, introverted spectrum. Do you like to create characters who differ from you? Or are you more like your characters than I was able to assess during a 2-minute encounter?

Are you sure it was me you met? I don’t think many people would describe me as laid-back or introverted. Maybe I was very sleepy at the time? In any case, I think I’ve written characters who are in many ways like me—who think and sound like me, even the bad parts of me/them—except they’re more competent at everything than I am.

Are you ever concerned about the reader's "acceptance" of some of the implausible circumstances, situations, character background/ personalities when writing your novels? These make for fascinating stories but sometimes I find myself saying..."C'mon...really"? Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed The Expats and The Travelers and can't wait to read/ listen to The Paris Diversion as my next book.

Chris Pavone:
My book club read The Expats as our August 2014 selection. About half-way through the novel there is a scene where the music “Hotel California" is playing in the background, with its ominous lyrics “you can never leave.” We recalled this scene at the end of the book, wondering if any of the characters could successfully “leave”. While the question is left intriguingly open, any thoughts you'd be willing to share?
