I suspect he would need a lot of proof. Once he believed the truth, the choice he would have to make (apologize to Tyler or try to ignore the whole situation) could turn out to be a character-defining moment.
I'm going to give Chip the benefit of the doubt and say he'd apologize. I love it when teens dig deep and do the right thing, especially when they have not been raised with good examples of that kind of integrity.
