Is this book a good idea to read aloud to children ages 4-12? What ages would it interest and/or is it purely YA?

Later, when I read it myself, I remembered parts of it and it felt really special, like I'd grown up with this story.
I never got nightmares from it, but I tried to build Fantasia out of Legos at some point in Kindergarden. (less)
