When you were growing up did you always know you wanted to become a writer? I certainly feel that this is an ambition of mine but every story I start I neglect to finish. Any advice?
Ah, starting is the fun part! When someone asked Faulkner how he wrote, he said, "With a pencil." So true--you just have to press on. Sometimes it helps to look at what you've written and flip on its head, imagine the opposite. And I always like the advice that flips the usual "write what you know" to write what you don't know about what you know. I did start thinking I wanted to write at age nine but it took a long time before I had the confidence to try.
