Debora Yes! Rated the book a 5, thought about that, and adjusted to a 4.
There must have been another way to end the book. I liked the way Henry and the counselors convinced her that her father would not change, but he loved her and to accept that. And then, he did come around in those last pages. That was great. But two love interests coming back from the dead
And spotted in crowds? Ugh
Linda Rae Yes! Those twists come right out of every soap opera. It cheapened the book of or me.

judith The loss in Nam was devastating, so having not one but 2 people "come back from the dead" in this book insults the reality of that.
Margaret Pagnotta I was hoping her brother would show up. And give her father hell for not putting her picture on the Heros Wall!

Melissa For this very reason it is highly likely I will never read another KH book. I will read just about anything so I guess more accurately I will never purchase a new release at retail. It would have to be deeply discounted almost free as I have better books to spend my money on then anything else that might end up like this book.
I like quite a few of her previous books. I was excited about the subject matter…as a nurse and daughter of a Vietnam vet. The fiction parts of this book were pure drivel. As a prolific reader it says something if this is the first book in four decades I almost DNF’d.
Barb Not at all. It’s fiction - not a historical recollection of these characters. A plot twist is there to add depth to a story. It’s all good.
Sandy Holz Really enjoyed 2/3 …the soap opera parts were annoying. VERY well researched, will be eye-opening for the younger generation who didn’t live thru the era. Definitely 😭😭😭 at the end, in a good way .
Kathryn Nelson I was not a fan of that particular storyline but gave the book a 5 stars regardless. I just pretended the last few pages never happened.

Karla Rizzi Yes I had this thought too and ending on that note felt too convenient to me. There was a lot here I liked but that felt like playing with emotions and did impact how I felt about the story.
Karma Hmm. I wasn't surprised or disappointed that the characters came back. We have to remember that this was pre-internet, when long-distance phone calls were very expensive, when news came to us much more slowly than it does today. Jamie was never pronounced dead as far as we know. And when he was released from being a POW, he went to his family, so it's not that strange that Frankie didn't know he survived. I love that he kept Frankie's stone all those years.

Dee I wasn't surprised and it didn't spoil the plot for me. I lived through the Vietnam era and often heard stories like that.
Alicia No, it seemed pretty predictable to me that Jamie had not really died since they found no remains and returned nothing to his father.
Ashley Cooprider I think so, too.
