Alicia There were many mentions about Joe as a father and how much Lara loved him that I don't think he was passive at all. He was a hardworking family man; good husband and father. He just wasn't a big part of this particular story -- both during the Tom Lake summer when it was all about Duke, and in the present when it was all about telling the story of Duke. This was a snapshot of a specific time in Lara's history in which Joe was not a big player.
Roxanne She says that the office (with spiders, etc) is in the barn.
Kimberly I figured he was just doing farm-related things. Lara indicates several times that they are short-staffed in a busy season. I assumed he had a never-ending to do list.

I agree that he was very much a background character.
