I wanted to thank you for your book. I just finished it and was precepting resident physicians and a patient with cerebral palsy came in needing paperwork done. I right away asked the resident if the patient could communicate? and the resident wasn't sure. I made sure that we referred the patient to a speech language pathologist as it was unclear when the pt was last evaluated. You have made me a better physician!

This was one of my main hopes for the book, that it would help all of us rethink our automatic assumption that nonspeaking = nonverbal/non-understanding/non-thinking. Hello! I am a Baltimore County teacher who just finished your book and read about your background. I have to know: how much was autobiographical? Even though Baltimore plays a very small role, it seems eerily like those of immigrants working in the city. Incidentally, I loved the legal aspects of "Miracle Creek: and really enjoyed how the story came together. It was a great debut.
