(view spoiler)[In Chapter 64, Violet is desperately trying to imbue the mended wardstone with her own power, even if it kills her, and she sees the Sage with the staff advancing on Xaden in the distance. Violet basically chooses death as she approaches burn out, knowing she won’t last much longer as she basically says her goodbyes to Tairn and Andarna, as she continues pouring her power into the wardstone, with the intent that getting the wards up will save everyone else.
After her mom knocks Violet off the wardstone, on page 613, Violet feels down the bond that Xaden is dying, and through the bond feels: “I’m dying on the battlefield, the last of my strength fading, burning, consuming my body. But it will be worth it to save the one I love. Violet.” I think this quote is Xaden’s thoughts in Violet’s head, through the bond.
In Chapter 66, from Xaden’s point of view, the Sage has Xaden suspended in midair and Xaden is in burnout. Xaden says what is happening is exactly what is in his nightmares—which sound just like Violet’s in Chapter 52. “So, I’m going to give you one last chance to make the right choice so we can get this over with,” the Sage says. Then, through the bond, Xaden feels that Violet is dying because she’s sacrificing herself to imbue the wardstone, and the Sage tells Xaden that he’s going after Violet next after he kills Xaden.
The Sage is too strong and Xaden is too weak, approaching burnout, and Xaden ends up drawing power from the ground on page 622: He’s too strong, and I have nothing left. But I’ll be damned if Violet suffers the consequences. He won’t get his hands on her. Not today. Not ever. The slush beneath my hand melts, and I feel… There’s something beneath me. A steady flow of unmistakable…power. “You cannot!” Sgaeyl shrieks. “I chose you!” But Violet chose me too. I reach.
So, basically, Xaden couldn’t defeat the Sage and panicked when he felt Violet dying and the threat of the Sage going after her, so Xaden drew power from the ground which turned him into venin. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[See, what I don't get about all this is why do the venin want to turn Xaden and Violet. The venin is holding Xaden in suspension, trying to get him to turn "for the right reasons." Why would venin want...more venin? If they're after power, why do they want other powerful venin to compete with? I love the twist at the end, I'm just confused about why the venin are recruiting Violet and Xaden. Also, I think it's super confusing to jump to Xaden's POV in the very last chapter. They just skip over Violet's reaction to Xaden's eyes, and now she's laying in bed next to Xaden as if it's cool to just snuggle up to a venin. And Xaden walks through the school to go visit Jack, but do others know he's venin now? He interacts with others in the hallways -- do they see his eyes? Everyone is just cool with this? I need a little dialogue, at a minimum, to understand *gestures widely* all of this. (hide spoiler)]

I totally agree with all these frustrations, which is why in the end i didn't feel sad or even shocked. I was just like ....huh? what just happened?!

(view spoiler)[I'd also like to add that he did it more to be able to kill the Venin. The Venin told him that once he killed Xaden he would be going after Violet. So in order to stop him from doing that he needed to draw more power and the only way to do that was to take it from the ground because he was reaching burnout from taking from his Dragon. Taking power from the ground turns you Venin. If you read his Chapter again he references putting his hands on the ground and feeling the power that is there. His Dragon then yells at him to stop. Which he doesn't. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[How- he drew power directly from the source (ground) rather than channeling it through his dragon. Apparently drawing power directly corrupts and you become venin.
Why- he was convinced that Violet was dying and this was the only way to save her since they were losing otherwise. (hide spoiler)]
