The pacing is slow, so it might be a great suggestion for teen readers who are used to fast-paced plot-based books: not inappropriate, just maybe difficult for them to get into.
In general, the writing overall seems very young, high potential for a cross-over audience. Where the author steered clear of adult romance, though, there's a more-detailed-than-necessary (?) scene in which the characters assist a number of mer-horses giving birth. Younger readers may have questions about placenta afterwards! :p(less)
