can i read this as a standalone? im so dumb bc i bought this book first thinking it was the first one but now im too excited to read it, can someone tell me if its necessary to read "things we never got over" before this? or can i read it after?

You really need to read them in order. There are things referenced in each book and you will want to know the background on such things.
