This book bears almost no resemblance to the musical. The book is dark and weird and very inappropriate for kids. There is a great deal of explicit, twisted content that is not explored in a way meant for kids or adolescents. It requires context and understanding that adult readers will bring. I definitely wouldn't advise anyone under 18 read it. I read it when I was in my mid 20s and I'm still traumatized.(less)
