Was writing a memoir easier or more difficult than writing your other books? Do you feel there are any major differences between this book as compared to your previous ones?
My books seem all equally hard / easy. Hard at times, easy at times. The new memoir, Under Magnolia, is more personal than my other books. In it, I go back to the voice I used to have when I only wrote poetry. The hardest part for me, especially in the novel Swan, is structure--keeping the material close to the core of the book. I often want to wander way off course. But that's what editing is for!
