Jeffrey asked Glynnis Campbell:

IN "KNIGHT'S PRIZE", THERE WAS A LOT OF WINE DRUNK BY THE CHARACTERS. IS THAT BECAUSE OF THE POOR QUALITY OF WATER BACK THEN?

Glynnis Campbell Contrary to belief, water in medieval times was fine for the most part. But people preferred ale or beer, sort of like us preferring soda or tea rather than plain water. The alcoholic drinks were fresher than what we have now, so less fermented, about 1%. Wine would be enjoyed by people who could afford it--generally nobles--and at about 18% alcohol, would be more likely to get a person drunk faster.
