This is my absolute favourite book, hands down. I was so excited when the movie came out, went to see it opening night, and was sorely disappointed. The beauty of the book lies not only in the writing, but in the design and experimental nature of the layout.
Multiple stories intertwine, whereas the movie primarily focusses on Oskar's journey to find the lock that fit his key. While Oskar's narrative is endearing, the story of his grandparents and the tale of the sixth borough are the ones I find more emotionally charged. These additional stories add humour, love, sadness, feeling.
I am constantly recommending this book to anyone – especially if they've seen the movie – as it is so much more than Hollywood made of it.

I definitely recommend reading the book too, even if you've already seen the movie. The style Foer uses is captivating. Also, the movies skips much of the story, especially the grandparents' love story, which adds quite a bit of humor.
Gina Marrone
yes, half of the entire story is not included in the movie

Read the book, read the book, read the book. Don't see the movie first, if at all. Let yourself get deep into the pages and don't be fooled by the title. Hint: What is it that is loud and close?

do yourself a favor and read the damn book please

I loved the movie so I have decided to buy the book. I couldn't stop reading it. I totally love it. The story is very touching. Love, love, love!
Jake Sandtner
Half the fun in the book was reading into the experimentation Safran Foer exercised. Definitely worth a read regardless.
Nancy
This is probably the only time I'll say that the movie was better than the book.

This is a rhetorical question. You should read the book definitely. It allows you to see the world through the eyes of an intelligent child. This book is my top 1 recommended reading list. I re-read it every year.

Yes. Always, yes. Part of understanding a work and hopefully loving it all the more is by experiencing it through different perspectives and media. If you read the book and watch the movie, you will have so much more to go by and much more info and impressions so you can form a better, more rounded view of it. Movies tend to omit parts of the plot, which some find a shame, but they also offer completely different interpretations or twists, which you may not always agree with, but are often worth considering. So have fun reading. It's a great book!

you have to read this book ı'm sure you won't regret.I said you have to read because any movie can not give feelings which contain in this book.

Definitely read the book. I started crying when I saw the movie trailer, but was extremely disappointed with the movie and almost walked out halfway through. The movie followed one of the smaller narrative of the book. It's incredible what Jonathan Safran Foer could capture in that book, with such beauty and grace.

I read the book first and recently saw the film. The book is far better and a bigger story. The film was annoying in some parts. The performance of Thomas Horn as the young boy and of his grandfather (Max von Sydow) were good.
Marie Van Der Poorten
Please do read the book! I read the book first and I was very disappointed with the movie. Jonathan Safran Foer has such a beautiful and moving way of writing which contributes very much to the value of the book and that gets lost in the movie. Also the storyline of the grandmother is a valid part of the story and it is not included in the movie.
Robin
they change stuff and leave stuff out in the movie, also they stick some movie star's face up there that you always afterwards see instead of the real character? and you can't fix that. plus a movie lasts an hour or two then it's over.

In my opinion this book should be read by high schoolers. It is not an inappropriate book. Oskar a character in the book just recalls memories and wants to explore more about his father after his father passes away from the nine eleven attacks. This book is great for independent reading or book clubs, or even as a whole class.

I was questioning whether i sould read it or not but thn i saw Shannon Monster's comment. :)
Laura
The movie was a fair representation, but the book is always better.
