Goodreads asked Mark Onspaugh:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Mark Onspaugh Write every day, never give up - I have sold stories that were rejected 20 or 30 times before someone said "yes" - remember that a rejection is often just one person.

It's all well and good to self-publish, but also try writing for a paying market, whether you write novels or short stories. Nothing will help you improve your craft like going through that fire. It hurts, it's maddening, but sometimes you get encouragement and helpful criticism - use those things, they're gold!
