Recently I've heard that writers have to stick with the genre that they debut in. Is this true? For example, would debuting with a stand-alone contemporary damage your chances of getting an urban fantasy series published next? If yes, would this still be a problem if the stories used the same themes, but in different genres?

Joanne Harris Publishers would probably tell you to stick to the same genre: but I never did, and it didn't do me any harm. My advice, such as it is, is this: write what you love, what you feel, what you need to write. Let the rest of it work itself out...
