John Surratt, the Lincoln conspirator who got away, hid out in Canada while his mother Mary Surratt stood trial and was hung for conspiracy to assassinate Lincoln. I began to wonder what kind of person could stand by while his mother was on trial for her life; what the dynamic was between mother and son; and how deeply they were each involved in the plot. From there, a book blossomed.
