Goodreads asked Michael Hidalgo:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Michael Hidalgo First - don't write for others. Write for yourself. Write everyday.

And then seek out someone who is a far better writer than you and give them what you've been working on. Ask them to be brutally honest with you. Chances are they will be ... and when you get your work back and it is slashed, corrected and torn apart you recognize that you are still alive and still breathing and everything will be okay.

More than that, you've learned a thing or two about writing which makes you better. Then do it all again.
