Do you use an outline when writing a book? How long does it take you to complete a book?

Hi there -- last year was the very first time I outlined for a book (wip)-- and the first year I did National November Write a Novel Month. It really shook up my process and I'd do it again. Generally, all I like to know when I start is my ending. Or at least have a few "sliding door" options on endings.
And I like to save room for surprising myself.
