Goodreads asked Susan Branch:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Susan Branch I've kept diaries all my life . . . and forever I've wanted to tell the story of how I ran away from California and tried to leave my broken heart behind, and "accidentally" started my life over all alone on Martha's Vineyard, an island in the Atlantic Ocean where they had this thing called "winter." I don't know anyone who hasn't had some form of this same sort of torture, and I thought my story might help others going through it. Because there is light at the end of the tunnel. You just can't see it while you're going through it. So I put it all in diary form, added lots of pictures of my little house in the woods, my little shelter from the storm, and called it, Martha's Vineyard Isle of Dreams.
