Why does Pendergast keep Proctor around? He always seems to screw up. He did in this book and it wasn't the first time.

I suppose you think D'Agosta screwed up too by not stopping Binky's kidnapping? Pendergast is dealing with dangerous individuals and sometimes they get the best of Pendergast and his helpers. I think in this instance Proctor probably underestimated Fernac. (less)
