Brad Taylor This is a little tough to answer. Lucas Kane developed over a period of years. When I wrote One Rough Man, I did so as a stand-alone novel. At that time, I had no idea there would be a second book, much less a third. I guess what I'm saying is Lucas Kane actually grew over time, with the actions in the novel dictating this growth (not necessarily in a good way). I didn't start out with a complete sketch of his characterization, but what I did want to create is a character that could show that the world isn't black and white. I wanted someone close to Pike's capability that could cause Pike to question his motivations and actions, and developed him with that in mind. Like Pike, he sees nothing wrong with his actions, rationalizing and justifying them based on his past experiences in combat. Unlike Pike, he's a damn sociopath.
