Goodreads asked Jeremiah Bryant:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Jeremiah Bryant It was an accumulation of having worked in customer service since I was 18, primarily in grocery and a movie theater. Those moments where you realize you are essentially somebody's "servant" and those particular guests who make you feel that way. After a long and mentally draining shift, I had a nightmare where I was helping a cold and demanding guest at the grocery store, and it was part of my job to come home with her and be her personal servant until she granted me relief. I felt trapped, like the "worker" version of myself was all that existed and no other part of me mattered anymore. The American mantra of "the customer is always right." It made me imagine a world that didn't feel far from reality where the "higher class" could contractually own the "lowers." The story is fiction, but some days it still feels real to me.
