It was an accumulation of having worked in customer service since I was 18, primarily in grocery and a movie theater. Those moments where you realize you are essentially somebody's "servant" and those particular guests who make you feel that way. After a long and mentally draining shift, I had a nightmare where I was helping a cold and demanding guest at the grocery store, and it was part of my job to come home with her and be her personal servant until she granted me relief. I felt trapped, like the "worker" version of myself was all that existed and no other part of me mattered anymore. The American mantra of "the customer is always right." It made me imagine a world that didn't feel far from reality where the "higher class" could contractually own the "lowers." The story is fiction, but some days it still feels real to me.

Boredom lol. The moment I become complacent in my life, I know it's time to take action. I've also always been inspired by my dreams and observing people in my day-to-day life. Somewhere between dreams and reality, inspiration occurs.

Just wrapped the final edit of my latest novel Dislodged and am in the developing, imagining phase of my next one. I have some images and ideas that are in their embryonic phase of becoming plot and characters. Going to start writing again this week and then I'll have a better idea of what the heck it is.

Read and trust your instincts. If you're a reader and a general lover of stories, trust that you already know how to do it. And if you don't, do it anyway and you will learn.

Surprising yourself. I love sometimes having a vague plan or idea and then through the action of writing seeing where the idea takes me. It feels like creating life and possibility where there was none before.

To me, writer's block means I'm thinking about too much at once, sort of like a brain clog. In those moments, I find ways to relax like listening to music. When I'm writing, I generally listen to jazz/light instrumental and it both calms my brain and stirs creativity.
