I think middle school might be a bit young, not for the romance appropriateness, but because there are a few scenes of intense violence, abductions, and a changeling child that is physically injured by the main character in her attempt to interrogate it. It might be better suited for the 15+ demographic.

I mostly read middle grade. I believe this is fine for kids in middle school. The romance doesn't go over brief kisses that aren't explained, and the violence isn't super graphic but there is a scene where someone is stabbed, another person cuts off their finger. There is not any swearing that I remember. It is in the Adult category because of the eloquent writing and adult characters. There are scenes of drinking and talk of marriage, but again, I believe a middle grade reader can read this.
