It was strongly implied / stated several times that Big Mak was probably into other criminal enterprises. The repeated mention of a fatal plane crash which was probably due to counterfeit plane parts reminded the reader that the results of counterfeit merchandise can be frivolous or very serious.

Their scheme wasn't complex, & you described it accurately, plus as I understood it, they also sold the superfakes passed off as originals. The bags are trademark fraud, a big part of customs enforcement, & yes, I got the impression Mac was into other counterfeiting, because this didn't ruin his business.
