I thought that Stella Maris could easily be read separately from The Passenger. The structure and style and content (I'd hate to use the concept of 'plotline' here) is different between books, too, yet still Cormac McCarthy. The only thing in common between the books is the characters, brother and sister and The Kid. Stella Maris is not a sequel and although (timewise) taking place prior to the other, it is not really a prequel to The Passenger, certainly not carrying any sort of the same 'plotline' of the first. While each may lend insight to the relationship of the brother and sister, I think they could be read in any order. Both require a re-read, perhaps an interesting experiment would be to read in reverse order the second time around.

I just finished Stella Maris after having read The Passenger and I want to roll right back into The Passenger. I think they can be read in either order.

No. I just read Stella Maris and I loved it. I have not yet read The passenger, nor do I know anything about it. But I will get to it soon.
Roberta Ragazzoni
I believe it would be advisable to read The Passenger first.
