Suden Käpälä asked this question about Sandworms of Dune (Dune, #8):
I am of a mind to read only Frank Herbert's original "Dune" books, plus BH/KJA's "Hunters"/"Sandworms of Dune". Is this a bad idea? Or can books 7 & 8 be read / understood / enjoyed without having read any of the prequels? (Please, no answers based on hate for these sequels. I'll want to make up my own mind about them. I just want to know whether I'll be hampered by ignorance of the prequels' plots & details.)

I've since read all of the Dune books, including the Herbert/Anderson prequels and the 'conclusion' to the original story line. As to the latter, there was one really good book in the material they presented in two volumes, but, owing to much pedantic re-hashing of canon and laughably poor editing it takes some effort not to be distracted and to focus on the salient story lines. "Hunters..." and "Sandworms' are still worth reading, if only to complete the cliff-hanger ending of FH's last one. I also quite enjoyed the "House..." prequels, but it fell apart in the third 'Corrino' book, once again, for wasting the readers' time with tedious rehashing.(less)
