Sarah
Sarah asked:

I wish we had learned what happened to Erik? That was the central mystery to the story. And was Daphne the woman Avery talked down from jumping?

Judith If Daphne was the woman, it means she was part of what happened & keeping that secret is probably why she became addicted & suicidal afterwards. It was cruel of her not to tell Erik's parents at the time, or at least come to them after she had Cameron.
Sharon As I finished reading the book, I thought of the possibility of a sequel. There are a lot of interesting characters and lots of opportunities for another book.

Victoria RD It seemed to me it was implied that Daphne was with him when the accident happened and was left completely traumatized by it — she couldn’t save him, freaked out and panicked that if she said anything to anyone, she might be blamed for causing the accident, or maybe even arrested for it.

Jean I agree with Karen's answer about what could have happened! This is why I mentioned in my review that unanswered questions are believable. The reader has been given some good hints about the possibilities.

Fran I think Daphne was with Erik, witnessed the accident, and was totally freaked out by it (and her unplanned pregnancy) leading to her years of substance abuse. But... if she is still alive, doesn't Cameron still want to find her? In the last chapter, he just tosses of that Aunt Jean is going to "look for her sister," but shouldn't he care more? That part doesn't make sense to me.
Dianne I did not think it implied that Daphne was present when it happened. I got the impression that a conversation was overheard about how a boom could knock someone off a boat, and Tova thought maybe that was what happened to Erik. Because I have a son who took his own life, we often want to figure out any possible reason our beloved child would be dead that isn't a suicide. Earlier in the story, it sounded like Erik was supposed to go out with more than one other person that evening. It seems like no one was forthcoming with info.
Autumn I think it’s a possibility that it was Daphne. When Tova was listening to Avery tell the story. Something clicked, another possibility. How Erik could’ve died to the boats boom. When listening to the story it probably crossed Tova’s mind that it was his mother. However there’s no confirmation and I think that’s the point. Tova has spent the last 30 years of her life running through possibilities of what could’ve happened. People go through life asking more questions than they’re answers. Tova doesn’t get a definite answer, and neither do we. We can wonder, but we might not know for sure.
Karen Antonaitis we did find out indirectly what happened,
Gail Knowing how old the woman appeared to be (that Avery talked down) would help determine if she might be Daphne.
Terri Bartolovich We did learn what happened when Avery talked about the boom.. A wind took it and knocked him over

Arborealswift I don’t think Daphne could have been the woman that Avery talked down. Cameron said he was 30, and Avery said she was 32… so Avery would have had to have been paddle boarding and speaking to this woman when she was only one or two years old?
