I think you're spot on. I'm wondering Cameron's attitude is part of the "I don't care about my Mom" wall that he's spent years erecting so it won't hurt so much that she doesn't seem to care about him.
I took it that he's found enough family with Tova, Avery, and Ethan that for the time being he doesn't feel the need to chase her anymore. Like he said throughout the book his mother chose to leave him, couldn't even spend a few cents to ever buy him a birthday card. The family he has at the end chose him, why would he chase after someone who never did? That's just my thought process.
