You misinterpreted the ending...Phoebe becomes the "heroine of the family," not Salo's mistress, Stella. They may never be able to forgive Salo & Stella, but Phoebe leads them toward understanding & inspires Johanna to finally get therapy & move on. I think having Johanna reclaim her life shows the author has respect for her character, not contempt

I'm left with many of the same questions you and Traci have raised here. Some parts of the ending just don't seem to line up with anything previously built from our understanding of the characters other than being unexpected (i.e. Phoebe choosing Harrison's college?). I would have liked to know more about Stella. We're left to assume she filled this hole in Sollo but why? She seems too good to be true and why did she tolerate this double life for so many years?
