Maine Mom Yes!! Agree on all counts...you outlined some other huge gaps in character development...

Erica Also agree. Much of the book depends very heavily on coincidences/serendipitous events that sometimes seemed hard to accept, especially when they happen in quick succession. The ending exemplified this for me, making it hard to accept all the loose ends being tied up so neatly.

Judith Rochelle forgave Lewyn because she had made some bad mistakes in her own life, & became less judgmental. Neither had really moved on from their first love, they already knew each other, so their reconciliation was fast-tracked. Eli is ruined, & his influence must disappear from Harrison's life before he can accept the family he's had all along. Phoebe chooses Roarke for the same reason Harrison did...to fill in the many gaps in her Walden education. And, Johanna's evolution took 17 years! Deciding not to waste any more of her life & getting help isn't superficial, it's real change.

London The one that nagged at me was why Phoebe chose Roarke, but there are a few scenes where she seems to really enjoy debating things and considering different points of view. So in that sense, she may benefit from going to Roarke.

Judith She will benefit in the same way Harrison did...they were given a liberal education & Roarke is classical, so it rounds out the gaps.
