Susan asked:

Do you have to read the first book or is this a standalone set in the "same world"? I love the idea of this one, but don't really want to commit to two books just to read this.

Aimee I read it without reading the first and enjoyed it. But there were holes and references that I did not quite get because of it.
Meredith I read as a standalone (by accident) and there were a couple of times I figured there was more backstop it wasn't a detriment
Stéphanie I read this as a standalone novel and I loved it!
H. It's really not a standalone, as the first book is quite plot intensive and the second is all about the consequences of everything that happened in the first. The relationships and family trees are quite complicated as well, as this is all explained in the first book but not exactly recapped in the second.

There are a few 1- and 2-star reviews from people who tried this as a standalone and were left confused.
WycEd Reader Our reviewer, Erica, read both books and says it can be read as a standalone. Enjoy!
