In Notorious, is Byer’s name (and perhaps his actual character) inspired by Byerly Vorrutyer from the Vorkosigan series? There’s just something of the fake town clown about him. This comment will only make sense if I’m correct. =)

Oh, wow! I didn't think of the connection until you mentioned it! It has been a LONG TIME since I read that series (which is awesome, by the way and merits a re-reading).
I suppose it is possible my subconscious came up with that name because you are right--they are very similar.
Consciously, I modeled Byer on the Scarlet Pimpernel.
I think the clownish "laughing on the outside, crying on the inside" type of character is fascinating and he definitely fits into that category.

Hi Shantal/Minerva SM Goodwin’s Absence of Mercy was a phenomenal read for the first in the historical murder mystery genre. Absolutely entered the book. But the icing is the audiobook. Narrated by Rupert Degas, it’s a great listen. My first favorite male narrator. I’m an fan now. When can be expect the next book?
