I was wondering the same! I was waiting for the hammer to drop and the last sentence of the book to allude to it or something - but nothing! Was surprised by this.

Her murder was chalked up to either Robert’s clients (who may not have been as happy with their defense or the victims of the clients…expecting a better result) or the victims of those he defended (wanted the criminal to get harsher sentence) made up a large group of individuals who wanted to hurt Robert.
