Goodreads asked Emily Whitney:

How do you deal with writer’s block?

Emily Whitney I usually just let it happen. If I have a block, it's usually because something isn't working with the story. So I step back, quit writing for a moment, and start analyzing and tearing apart the story in my mind so I can figure out where I need to go or what I need to fix! When writing The Orchid, I was constantly asking myself "Why would they do that?" or "What's the point?" so I could engage readers in those questions too. If I didn't have an answer, I knew something needed to change! I often live in this state of processing - especially while I'm trying to sleep!
