(view spoiler)[I think asking this defeats the purpose of the scene but... what the hell is a charoite? did paelis say something else and falcio misheard? will this whole charoite business be explained in the upcoming series? did I miss something? (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[A charoite is a type of gemstone, which Falcio interpreted literally for several years until he met Aline and realized the "charoites" were Paelis' heirs. In the final scene with them together in Tyrant's Throne on the hill in Phan, just before Paelis fades away and Falcio asks if Filian was the charoite that he was meant to find, Paelis replies, "What's a 'Charoite'?" as a way to piss him off. The king always did have a perverse sense of humour. (hide spoiler)]

I really enjoyed the first two books and I am eagerly awaiting the third one. My one main issue with Knight's Shadow is how the rape of Falcio's wife is used as motivation for his character (such an overused fantasy trope) and graphic nature of the sexual violence in the book (more than the first). Has Falcio really put the past behind him and will future installments continue to dwell on this sexual violence?
