This is one of those questions where I think the answers you're looking for are already in the (sub)text. At the same time, I like to leave a little blank space for the reader's interpretation--literature is a lot less interesting when all the answers are provided for you. What I'll say is that human relationships--especially when they're compressed into such close quarters and shaped by such perilous circumstances--are messy and complicated and not as easy to label or define as we'd all like to think, and different people experience the same relationships differently.
