Kayla James
Kayla James asked Lawana Blackwell:

I just wanted to see if you’re still writing. Currently unpublished at the moment, but still writing. I can’t finish a first draft. I am writing a historical romance. Any advice?

Lawana Blackwell Welcome to the club, Kayla! I'm still pecking at my first draft. Do you have an outline or do you create as you go along with a premise and ending in mind? There is no wrong answer; I tend to do the second.

Are you editing as you write? I'm guilty of that. I want the chapter perfect before I start the next. It causes you to stay in the project too long, getting weary along the way, but I'm too long in the tooth to change.

I'll be happy to look at a your first 5 pages, double-spaced, if that helps. It's enough to show a sample of your writing style. You could send a 2-3 paragraphs explaining your premise too. If the idea of showing your work terrifies you...welcome to that club too. But we have to toughen up, because having others read our work is end we want to achieve, right?

I'm at lawanablackwell@yahoo.com
