“I am Number Four”, by Pittacus Lore, is about a teenage alien boy.Yep, he’s an alien. Pittacus Lore is the author of the popular I Am Number Four series. He has won numerous awards for his writing, such as: Delaware Diamond Award, Isinglass Teen Read Award, Iowa Teen Award, and more. Pittacus Lore conveys plenty of messages throughout the novel, but the main one being,”Everyone has different talents and gifts.” Number Four, or his current name, “John,” is different because he is an alien (although he looks just like an ordinary human) and he has extraordinary powers that humans dream of possessing. To reinstate the claim, “Everyone has different talents and gifts.”

In I am Number Four, Pittacus Lore uses literary devices, especially Descriptive Language. Descriptive Language helps the reader vividly imagine what’s taking place in the passage. “They are taller than we are, and still look similar except in the face. They have no pupils and their irises are a deep magenta color, some of them black,” is an example of Descriptive Language from the text. Pittacus Lore is using Descriptive Language in that sentence. He is “painting a picture” in the reader’s imagination so they can truly understand what is happening. He is using sensory details to describe a superior alien race.

Also, Pittacus Lore uses more literary devices such as repetition. Repetition is an effective literary device, and Pittacus Lore uses it a lot. One example of repetition from the text is, “I’ll miss the sun and the warmth. I’ll miss the gecko that watched from the wall each morning as I ate breakfast… I’ll miss the thunderstorms that used to come out of nowhere.” Pittacus Lore continues with, “I’ll miss the dolphins that sometimes feed when the sun sets.” This repetition helps the reader truly understand how John, the protagonist, will really miss home.

Pittacus Lore also uses a great deal of symbolism, and it is very effective. “When one of us is found and killed, a circular scar wraps around the right ankle of those still alive. And residing on our left ankle, formed when the Loric charm was first cast, is a small scar identical to the amulet each of us wears. The circular scars are another part of the charm. A warning system so that we know where we stand with each other, and so that we know when they’ll be coming for us next.” That was a direct quote from the passage and it uses symbolism to describe the Loric charm that is mentally attached to the 9 Loric survivors. The charm is special because it forces their hunters to kill the numbers in order. For example, if a Mogadorian tries to kill Number 7 before Number 6, then any damage they try to afflict on that number is reversed and done upon them instead. The symbolism Pittacus Lore used “symbolizes” or represents the power of the Loric charm and also symbolizes the other numbers that died before them.
In conclusion, everyone has different gifts, and it’s ok if you don’t know what your’s is right now because eventually you will find out. It is always imperative to always be yourself. Although John has a hard time accepting who he is in the beginning of the novel, in the end he begins to understand that it is ok not to be like others and that he is important. Always keep this question in mind: Would you rather be proud and confidently show your gifts, or try to be somebody else that you’re actually not?(less)
